The Philip Project - Understanding and Sharing God's Word 2021/22 Southampton Course

  • How can I teach the Bible to others?
  • How does the Bible relate to my own culture and country?

If you are a Christian international student, or an international living or working in the UK temporarily, and you are asking these questions, then the Philip Project could be for you! Check out: www.fisuk.org/philip-project/

What is the Philip Project?

The Philip Project is a Friends International course designed to help people understand the Bible better, with a view to sharing it well with others.

The course seeks to achieve this through training and mentoring participants to understand God’s Word well with a view to them being able to teach it faithfully, so they are well-equipped to serve Jesus Christ and his Church throughout the world.

Who is it for?

The Philip Project is for Christian international students, and internationals living or working in the UK temporarily; it is also for those who are working with such people in their Christian service.

How does it work?

The goals of the Philip Project are realised in three ways, through:

  • Nine Training Days held on Saturdays once a month, led by experienced Bible teachers.
  • One-to-one Mentoring to encourage each participant’s Christian development and to aid their growth in understanding and teaching the Bible.
  • A National Training Weekend with participants from other Philip Project centres in the UK.

When does it happen?

The Saturday Training Day dates for the 2021-22 Southampton course are:

30 October 2021

20 November 2021

11 December 2021

8 January 2022

12 February 2022

12 March 2022

23 April 2022

14 May 2022

11 June 2022

Who will teach the course?

Rev David Hunt will lead and teach on the course alongside Friends International staff workers and a variety of guest speakers.

What happens on each Training Day?

The 2021-22 Southampton Training Days run from 9.30am to 3.30pm. During our Training Days, we will explore various topics within three broad areas:

Bible Overview. This will help you grasp the Big Story of the Bible and how all the pieces of it fit together.

Understanding the Bible. We explore the different types of writing found in the Bible and how we are to understand them.

Teaching the Bible: We show you how to prepare and deliver talks and Bible studies, and provide opportunities to put the theory into practise.

How much does it cost?

The course fee is £120, which covers the cost of all the teaching materials, a hot meal each Training Day and refreshments; the fee can be paid in termly instalments. If you cannot afford the full fee, bursaries are available; please contact us for details.

Where will the course take place?

The course will be held at the Swaythling Baptist Church, Fleming Road, Southampton SO16 2JD.

The Church is located near the Burgess Road McDonalds, and is only 5- minutes walking distance from Swaythling station. It is convenient for the Unilink U6 bus route and near the Wessex Lane halls of residence.

What previous Southampton students have said:

“The Philip Project has helped me gain an overview of the Bible and look into how the whole Bible points to Jesus. It has helped me understand the motivation and attitude of a Bible Study leader, and I have become more committed to reading the Bible more regularly.”

[Masters Engineering student, from India]

“I have learned a great deal about the Bible from the Old to the New Testament. I am optimistic of being able to lead Bible Studies with other Christian groups when I get to my home country.”

[PhD Health Science student, from Ghana]

“I really enjoyed the Bible Overview sessions. Even though I thought I already knew quite a lot about the Bible, it was very useful to go over the entire Bible again. Leading a Bible Study for the first time, and giving my first talk, were definitely highlights as well.”

[Chiropractic College student, from Holland]
